蘭陽平原原是因地塊陷落而成的海灣，雨水由北、西、南三面的山地，匯流刻蝕成眾多大小河流，將海灣逐漸埋積成沖積扇平原。
平原西邊的沈積物以礫、砂為主，東邊以細砂、粉砂、泥為主，平原上的沈積物厚度以中心最厚，逐漸向北、西和南邊減薄，有如畚箕狀，開口朝向太平洋。
蘭陽平原地區在人文景觀特殊性的形塑過程中，雖然漢族扮演關鍵性角色，但卻以葛瑪蘭族最早在這個地域活動。葛瑪蘭族的祭司皆為女性，男性則有年齡階級。地區上由於水利資源豐沛，發展出明顯的散村聚落。
金棗大多分佈在台灣北部，其中宜蘭縣栽培面積最大，佔全國92%以上， 為金棗主要栽種地區。蘭陽平原三面環山，東臨太平洋，山風多，濃濃露氣與溼雨寒涼的氣候，正是金棗樹絕佳之生長環境。
